System Approach
On August 31, 2020, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 through Resolution 74/299, with the goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by at least 50% during that period. Fundación Aleatica para la Seguridad Vial aligns with the Safe System approach of the Global Plan to drive impact across three strategic pillars: improving road infrastructure safety, ensuring vehicle safety, and promoting the safe use of roadways.
The Safe System approach represents a shift from the traditional paradigm to prevent serious injuries and fatalities caused by road traffic incidents.
The Safe System approach is based on the following principles:
- Road transport is a complex system, and safety must be placed at its core.
2. It draws on core knowledge of the root causes of traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries—particularly human fallibility and vulnerability.
3. People, vehicles, and road infrastructure must interact in a way that ensures a high level of safety.
4. All stakeholders involved in mobility and road traffic share responsibility for creating safe conditions for all road users.
Strategic Areas of Action
Safer Infrastructure:
Promote projects focused on improving road infrastructure in urban areas, aligned with the mobility hierarchy, and apply leading international standards and guidelines to minimize infrastructure-related risks on high-performance roads.
Safer Vehicles:
Promote and support best practices and global standards for safer vehicles that help prevent road crashes and protect users when crashes occur.
Safer Road Users:
Drive the Road Safety Movement to inform, raise awareness, and educate the population on the safe use of roadways, and the importance of complying with traffic rules.
