Pedestrian Day: Walking shouldn’t be a risk

Walking is the most common mode of mobility in Mexico, and for many young people, it’s not just a daily routine—it’s a necessity. According to the findings of the First Road Safety Perception Survey in Mexico, presented by Fundación Aleatica, 70% of young people (ages 12 to 29) walk at least five days a week.

When asked how safe they feel while walking, a striking generational gap emerges: only 26% of young people consider themselves “very safe,” compared to 74% of adults. In other words, the younger the pedestrian, the lower their perceived safety in public spaces.

The survey also reveals that over 35% of young respondents fall into the lowest levels of perceived safety (ranging from “very unsafe” to “neutral”), indicating a weak sense of urban and road safety. This may stem from deficient infrastructure.

Through the First Road Safety Perception Survey in Mexico, Fundación Aleatica seeks to shed light on the most vulnerable groups—including youth—and to encourage actions that place their needs at the center.

Safe walking must be a right for everyone. At Fundación Aleatica, we reaffirm our commitment to making visible those most at risk and to building a safer road environment that protects, includes, and listens.
