Aleatica Foundation Strengthens Strategic Partnerships at the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety

  • The Global Ministerial Conference is the most important international forum on road safety, bringing together over 80 countries committed to accelerating progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of halving global road fatalities by 2030.
  • At the conference, Aleatica Foundation signed Memorandums of Understanding with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety and the FIA Foundation—two key institutions driving progress in the UN’s Second Decade of Action for Road Safety.

Marrakech, Morocco, February 17, 2025 – Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety participated in the lead-up to the official opening of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, reaffirming its global commitment to the goals of the UN’s Second Decade of Action for Road Safety, particularly its central objective: to reduce road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.

Road safety challenges have escalated into an urgent global public health crisis. Traffic crashes claim nearly 1.2 million lives each year—approximately 3,200 per day—and remain the leading cause of death among children and young people aged 5 to 29.

Aleatica Foundation formalized two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs): one with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety and another with the FIA Foundation. These partnerships are vital, as improving road safety requires a comprehensive, multisectoral approach involving collaboration and coordination among the private sector, public institutions, and civil society to establish high infrastructure standards and protect the most vulnerable road users.

I) Strengthening Safe and Sustainable Mobility: MOU with Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety

To enhance safe and sustainable mobility, Aleatica Foundation and the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizing a collaborative relationship that has been growing over time.

In November 2024, with support from Aleatica Foundation, the Alliance hosted the first Latin American Regional Meeting. The event played a key role in mobilizing organizations and advancing advocacy efforts leading into the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. It brought together 163 participants from 20 countries, including 39 NGOs.

The agreement lays the groundwork for continued dissemination of evidence-based actions to reduce fatalities and serious injuries, encourages government accountability, and addresses key challenges in road safety. It also opens new opportunities for regional cooperation in developing effective and sustainable strategies.

Aleatica Foundation also committed to actively participating in Alliance-led initiatives, supporting the dissemination of campaigns, communications materials, and advocacy projects.

During the panel Achieving a Change in Financing for Road Safety Worldwide: The Way Forward, organized by the Global Alliance, Bosco Martí, President of Fundación Aleatica para la Seguridad Vial, spoke about the barriers NGOs face in accessing funding for road safety projects: “It is essential for NGOs to identify and address specific public-interest needs by focusing on real issues affecting mobility and safety. Projects must be part of a clearly defined strategy, with measurable objectives that allow for the evaluation of their effectiveness. They should also be designed with scalability and replicability in mind, enabling implementation across different communities and contexts. Without these elements, many NGOs struggle to access funding, as donors and institutions seek initiatives with strong potential for impact and sustainability.”

Lotte Brondum, Executive Director of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, stated: “Today we are proud to announce that Aleatica Foundation reaffirms its commitment to supporting the goal of reducing road crash deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030, in alignment with the Global Plan. The Foundation is also driving the necessary investments to save lives. Together, we will continue to hold governments accountable for implementing evidence-based, people-centered interventions,” Brondum concluded.

II) Advancing the Right to Safe Mobility for Children: MOU with FIA Foundation

On the same day, Aleatica Foundation and the FIA Foundation formalized their collaboration as part of the Child Health Initiative, which aims to ensure the right of children and adolescents to safe and sustainable mobility. This joint effort seeks to promote practical solutions that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through concrete actions in road safety, urban planning, and transportation.

Through this partnership, Aleatica Foundation will share knowledge, experiences, and strategies to enhance its impact and help create safer environments for children. The Foundation committed to active participation in workshops, meetings, communities of practice, and global events related to the initiative, while also engaging in public awareness and outreach campaigns.

As the MOU with FIA Foundation was signed under the umbrella of the Child Health Initiative, Bosco Martí noted: “This is a historic moment for Fundación Aleatica. This alliance pushes us to keep working to make a tangible difference in the lives of children and young people around the world. This is more than just a Memorandum of Understanding—it is a commitment to protect future generations, uphold their right to mobility, and create a world where every journey is safe.”

Martí concluded by stating: “At Aleatica Foundation for Road safety, we call on the Government of Mexico to continue working with us hand in hand to save lives, reduce fatalities and injuries, and move forward in harmonizing state and local laws with the General Law on Mobility and Road Safety. Because road safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
