Are Young People Really the Main Cause of Road Traffic Fatalities?

Young people aren’t the problem—but they’re not exempt either. While they’re often automatically blamed for road crashes, data shows that the proportion of young people aged 12 to 29 involved in traffic incidents is nearly the same as that of adults over 30. What does change across generations, however, is risk perception.

While 3 out of 4 adults recognize speeding, using a cellphone while driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as major risk factors, among young people, only 1 in 4 sees these behaviors as serious threats. That perception gap is a critical warning sign: it’s not just about rules, but about how youth understand—or downplay—danger.

That’s why Aleatica Fundation for Road Safety  is launching the campaign ¡No Te Hagas!, a communication strategy aimed primarily at motorcyclists, using humor and a direct tone to engage people who often feel invincible. The campaign aims to shift the narrative without blaming—recognizing the right to safe mobility while challenging the false sense of control that often accompanies youth.

¡No Te Hagas! is more than a message; it’s a call to action for young people to recognize the problem—and, more importantly, to become part of the solution.
