Aleatica Foundation trains 218 police officers from Mexico City and the State of Mexico to improve the response to road traffic crashes in the Metropolitan Area

  • The Road Safety Training Days for police officers run by the Foundation have now accumulated more than 8,000 hours of specialized training.
  • This edition included the participation of traffic, road safety and mobility officers from both Mexico City and the State of Mexico.
  • In Mexico City and the State of Mexico, more than 27,340 road traffic crashes occur each year; police officers are generally the first responders.

Mexico City, August 15, 2025.— With the attendance of traffic, road safety and mobility officers from Mexico City’s Secretariat of Mobility (SEMOVI), the State of Mexico Secretariat of Mobility (SEMOV), the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), representatives from five municipalities in the State of Mexico (Atlacomulco, Atizapán, Ecatepec, Tlalnepantla and Nezahualcóyotl) and boroughs, Fundación Aleatica para la Seguridad Vial trained 218 police officers this week at the Mexico City Police University (UNIPOL) through its Open Road Safety Training Days, a program that since 2023 has updated 1,120 officers and has amassed 8,291 hours of specialized training.

According to data from the 2025 Road Safety Monitor, prepared by Aleatica Foundation, 2023 was the deadliest year for road crashes in Mexico since 2015, with 16,489 recorded fatalities, with motorcyclists accounting for 62.7% of serious injuries nationwide. In addition, when adding pedestrians, these two populations make up 72% of fatalities in traffic incidents. In this regard, it is urgent to strengthen prevention and enforcement strategies in all states to prevent further fatalities on streets and highways.

According to the Monitor, if effective measures are not taken, the trend could worsen. Projections indicate that by 2030 the number of fatalities from traffic incidents could reach 25,434 per year. Beyond the human toll, this problem represents an extremely high economic cost, estimated at 2.63% of national GDP due to traffic incidents. Addressing this challenge requires multisectoral work and shared responsibility among authorities, civil society, and citizens.

For this reason, in this edition we enhanced the Training Days with updated content and practical activities that strengthen the operational and preventive capabilities of police officers. The training combines theory and practice to address the prevention, mitigation, and response to road traffic crashes from the perspective of the Safe System Approach, contributing to the continuous updating of road safety knowledge.

Main updates for the 2025 edition:

  • Data-based evidence: The Normative Framework module integrates findings from the Road Safety Perception Survey, developed by Aleatica Foundation together with SIMO Consulting and the Traffic and Road Safety Research Institute (INTRAS) at the University of Valencia. The campaign “¡No Te Hagas!” was also presented as an example of disseminating content grounded in scientific information.
  • Flagging procedures: Expanded practical training on the safe deployment and removal of devices during a crash, ensuring scene protection and smooth reintegration of traffic.
  • Group activities: Collaborative exercises that help identify road risks (visibility, superelevations, signage, among others) and propose improvements to everyday environments, fostering the exchange of good practices.
  • Guest experts: Specialists from Aleatica share their experience in road infrastructure management and answer technical questions, enriching the rigor of learning.
  • Audiovisual resources: Interactive multimedia materials energize the sessions and facilitate knowledge retention.

Each police officer will receive, upon completion, a DC-3 Labor Competency Certificate with curricular validity issued by the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS, in Spanish).

The Director of Aleatica Foundation, Fernanda Espinosa Arcega, recognized the key role of partnerships in the program’s success: “From Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety, we express our most sincere gratitude to the Mexico City Police University (UNIPOL) for its invaluable support in carrying out the Road Safety Training Days. Its commitment to the ongoing training of traffic officers, as well as the generous provision of its facilities, has been fundamental to the development of this successful joint effort for the second consecutive year.”

With this program, Fundación Aleatica reaffirms its commitment to making the right to mobility under conditions of road safety a reality for all people, through the ongoing updating of knowledge for traffic officers who help save lives and safeguard roadways.
