“The Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety recently received great news. The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety considered that the Foundation’s mission and work for road safety made it worthy of membership.
This is important because this organization, which is supported by the United Nations and is recognized worldwide, is a conglomerate—an alliance of nongovernmental organizations that implement and generate public policies. Every day, they work to get initiatives tackling road safety approved in their countries to help save lives.
The members and their organizations respond to the needs they see around them. Aleatica Foundation impacts people’s well-being and lives. What makes the difference is cooperation—bringing together the efforts of private and public sectors and civil society.
Specifically, work on initiatives aligned with the Safe System Approach stands out. This approach, promoted by the United Nation’s second Decade of Action for Road Safety, recognizes that tangible changes in road culture require improvements in a) infrastructure, b) vehicles, and c) users’ behavior to reach the goal of reducing deaths and serious injuries caused by traffic accidents by 50% by 2030.
To achieve this, the Foundation’s main lines of action are split into three main areas: education and awareness-raising programs, promotional efforts, and technological initiatives.
Creating synergy with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety helps us stay focused. The Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety aims to promote the right to mobility, making road safety a reality for all people. The link with international organizations enriches the Foundation’s work and points the way forward through the experiences of those who are already working on the issue.
Road safety demands immediate responses because a failure to act causes enormous harm to society as a whole. By being one of the member organizations, the Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety is now a global leader. Today, its first actions will be focused on Mexico, and they will then expand to other countries where Aleatica operates.
The Foundation plays a vital role in the growing worldwide movement to reduce the devastating effects of traffic accidents. The goal is clear: save lives.
In Mexico, more than 16 thousand deaths every year are caused by traffic accidents—making them the ninth leading cause of death in the country—and these accidents leave more than 32 thousand people with permanent disability. The consequences of traffic accidents in Mexico—in both deaths and injuries—have a human capital cost between 19 and 39 billion pesos annually.
Deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents in Mexico have reached such a scale that they must be prioritized as a public issue that requires coordinated action from various sectors.
The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety is an organization founded in 2011 by the NGO members with the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) mechanism.
Currently, it represents more than 300 member NGOs who work for road safety in more than 100 countries around the world. Organizations such as Roadway Safety Foundation, the International Road Federation, International Road Assessment Program (iRAP), and FIA, among many others, are active members.
The Global Alliance was established in response to a demand from NGOs for a forum where they can share knowledge and collectively advocate for road safety and the rights of traffic accident victims. The Alliance serves its members in three key areas: 1) networks and exchange, 2) promotion, and 3) skill development. The Alliance is also a nonprofit organization registered under Swiss Civil Code, Articles 60-79.
Membership offers the Aleatica Foundation key benefits and a clear aim, giving it a voice in international authorities and organizations.
The Aleatica Foundation joins the movement to grow and strengthen the collective potential of international cooperation, as well as fostering change and effective action on road safety, safer mobility, and support for victims worldwide.
Furthermore, starting today, joining forces with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety amplifies the Foundation’s commitment to generate deeper participation between partners and allies to continue building our story and strengthening the bonds with the rest of the world. We are all road safety.”
