Aleatica Foundation Announces the Call for Submissions for the We Are All Road Safety Prize

  • Every half hour in Mexico someone dies from a road accident. Our country ranks second in Latin America for traffic accident fatalities.
  • The prize will award grants of up to MXN $1,500,000 to incentivize the work of civil society organizations.

Mexico City, May 18, 2023 — Aleatica Foundation launches the call for the first We Are All Road Safety Prize, with the goal of identifying and fostering best practices in road safety that have been shown to effectively reduce serious injuries and deaths caused by road accidents and that are replicable.

In Mexico, 42 people die every day as a result of road accidents. This places our country second in Latin America, just after Brazil, for the highest number of fatalities—the rate is 11.4 for every 100 thousand people. It is worth noting that pedestrians make up the largest number of deaths (37%), followed by motorcyclists (31%), and vehicle occupants (29%).

Most of these cases could be prevented if we all work together for safer roads and safer vehicles, in addition to achieving greater compliance with laws and the adoption of best road safety practices.

It is in this context that the Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety steps up to the plate in response to the United Nations call to join the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, a global commitment that is part of the 2030 Agenda. It focuses on fulfilling Goal 3.6 of SDG 3, which aims to cut death and injuries caused by traffic accidents by 50%.

To help reach these goals, the Foundation has created the We Are All Road Safety Prize, open to civil society organizations that are authorized grantee organizations. The prize will be divided into the following categories: safe infrastructure, safe vehicles, and safe mobility users. The period for entries, registration, and submission of documents will be from today, May 18th to August 21, 2023.

“This prize seeks to foster the work of civil society organizations focusing on road safety following the safe system approach, incentivizing the replication of successful projects through the awarding grants,” commented Bosco Martí, president of the Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety. “With this initiative we aim to contribute, through multi-sectorial collaboration, to reducing the serious injuries and deaths caused by road accidents in Mexico,” he added.

The jury will be made up of nine well-known road safety experts. Drawn from national and international spheres, they will possess multidisciplinary profiles and ample experience in the field.

To participate, organizations must be Authorized Grantee organizations. They must register on the www.premioseguridadvialsomostodos.org site and submit the requested information. In addition, they need to fill out the form, include documentation of the participating project, and meet the criteria. The project must fit into one of the categories.

The three winning organizations will be announced in November, and they will be recognized with a donation of up to MXN $500,000 each.

The Aleatica Foundation seeks to promote the right to mobility in safe road conditions for all people and to contribute to changing road safety culture.
