Mexico City, 28 February 2024. As part of the Expo Foro Movilidad, the main event for the passenger transport sector, held at Expo Santa Fe in Mexico City from 28 February to 1 March, Fernanda Espinosa, Director of the Aleatica Foundation, presented the “Decálogo de la Seguridad Vial: Conducción Segura en el Autotransporte de Pasajeros y Turismo” at the TeleVía stand.
In her speech, Fernanda Espinosa highlighted that the Decalogue is a comprehensive guide with ten measures that facilitate the identification and reporting of risky and unsafe conditions in the infrastructure and condition of vehicles. This approach contributes significantly to preserving the life and physical integrity of passengers and other mobility users in cases of traffic incidents. In addition, he underlined the importance of all industry participants joining efforts to adopt the Safe System Approach promoted by the United Nations.
It is worth noting that in such an approach, public transport operators play a key role as proactive professional drivers to identify and report road infrastructure conditions and vehicle conditions that could endanger the life and physical integrity of passengers and other mobility users.
According to the Aleatica Foundation’s Road Safety Monitor, during 2022 in Mexico, there were 15,674 fatalities, 98,748 injuries and 391,298 crashes for all road users. This represents an increase of 8.4% in fatalities, 9% in injuries and 10.1% in road crashes compared to 2021.
Regarding bus crashes on roads, annual variation is observed with an increase of 7.5% in 2019, a decrease in 2020, an increase of 30% in 2021 and a slight decrease of 3.5% in 2022. These fluctuations could be related to external factors such as changes in road conditions, road safety policies and global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Faced with this reality, the Decalogue presents different measures with a call to action for transport operators to avoid road accidents. Among the measures we can highlight: Keep full attention while driving; Comply with the established speed limits; Take active breaks on long journeys, among others.
Passenger and tourist transport represents a fundamental pillar of mobility in Mexico, both on the roads and in cities, providing a vital means for the daily flow of people and goods. Its efficiency and safety have a direct impact on the quality of life of the population and the sustainability of cities.
