Aleatica Foundation: one year contributing to save lives

The aim of the Aleatica Road Safety Foundation is to promote the right to safe mobility for all people. Since its creation a little over a year ago, the Foundation has joined the efforts of the United Nations’ second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, which sets the goal of reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.

Globally, road crashes are the cause of death of more than 1.3 million people, and 50 million are injured each year. In Mexico, road traffic deaths and injuries are a major public health and economic development problem. In this first year, we have given unprecedented importance to linking with leading national and international road safety institutions.

Multi-sectoral dialogue is key and has included civil society, government and business. We highlight as achievements the close and active liaison with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), the participation in regional forums of the National Strategy for Mobility and Road Safety (ENAMOV) from February to June this year. We are also proud to have been part of the “The Eighth Global Meeting of Nongovernmental Organizations Advocating for Road Safety and Road Victims”, a global meeting held in El Salvador; as well as the meeting of the European Association for the Operation of Toll Road Infrastructure (ASECAP) and participation in the World Road Congress, held in Prague in early October, as well as fruitful meetings with Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) and Ilan Goldfajn, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

During our first year of activities, we contributed to try to make an impact by developing 3 priority programmes that already show very concrete achievements. Here is a summary of our most relevant contributions.

  • We Are All Road Safety Award

Fundación Aleatica para la Seguridad Vial is pleased to announce in the framework of its anniversary the successful results of the first edition of the We Are All Road Safety Award. This award aims to identify and support best practices in road safety in Mexico, promoting initiatives from civil society that can be replicated to contribute to a safer road environment.

In this inaugural edition of the award, we had the participation of 44 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) authorised donors, all with a deep commitment to road safety and the protection of lives on Mexican roads.

The evaluation jury, composed of renowned and prestigious figures in the field of Road Safety, had the difficult task of selecting among outstanding projects. In the end, seven finalist projects have been chosen, two of which focus on safe infrastructure and five on safe road users. It is important to mention that, although no projects were registered in the category of safe vehicles, the quality of the finalist projects is exceptional.

In the safe infrastructure category, the Da-tar Tuk organization stood out by receiving the highest score in the evaluation. Its project, “Spaces of Peace and Dignity”.

In the safe user category, two practices received the best evaluations: The Cinco Panes y Dos Peces organization stood out with its project “Sumando Voluntades por la Vida y la Seguridad Vial” (Adding Wills for Life and Road Safety), and the organization Movimiento de Activación Ciudadana (MOVAC) was recognized for its “Safe School Zone” project.

  • Road Safety Training

Fundación Aleatica para la Seguridad Vial, committed to promoting a safer road environment in Mexico, is proud to present the progress and achievements of its second strategic program: Road Safety Training. The main objective of this program is to promote education and awareness of road safety among different sectors of society.

Theoretical and Practical Courses for Employees. The work begins at home

Through this program, Fundación Aleatica has provided a theoretical and practical course on safe motorcycle driving to more than 100 employees of the Motorcyclist Education Center of the Circuito Exterior Mexiquense (CEM), a roadway concessioned to Aleatica. This course included support for obtaining a type A1 driver’s license and the provision of certified safety helmets. The practical training was carried out in collaboration with the renowned Italika brand.

Road Safety Webinar for Journalists

The Foundation organized an enriching webinar for journalists to share relevant material and encourage informed and sensitive journalism on road safety issues. During this event, strategies to promote a safe systems approach and the iRAP (Road Risk Assessment Program) methodology, with which the Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding since 2022, were discussed. Twenty-one journalists attended the event.

Open Day on Road Safety for Police Elements

Fundación Aleatica’s commitment to road safety is reflected in the training of police officers. Three training days were held at the end of August, with six training groups, each lasting 8 hours, for a total of 345 traffic police officers from Mexico City, the State of Mexico and municipalities such as Naucalpan, Valle de Chalco Solidaridad and Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl. These trainings provided DC-3 certificates with official validity issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), supporting the acquisition of labor competencies.

“Safe Infrastructure” Training for Aleatica Employees

As part of this road safety training program, 17 Aleatica employees received training in “Safe Infrastructure”, with the accreditation of the International Road Assetment Programme (iRAP) methodology. This reinforces the Foundation’s commitment to improving road infrastructure and road safety.

  • Spaces in Motion: urban interventions for safer mobility

Before the end of 2023, Aleatica Foundation is committed to carry out three urban interventions with a priority focus on the safety of vulnerable users in Mexico. These interventions will focus on improving urban infrastructure, especially for vulnerable users such as pedestrians and students who pass through these areas on a daily basis.

In collaboration with our partners, 3M and the converter Intertráfico, Fundación Aleatica, based on principles of Tactical Urbanism that seeks to improve mobility and pedestrian safety through interventions in public space, will recover and transform public space to provide more efficient and, above all, safer mobility for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable users. This is what we call “Spaces in Motion”. Our commitment is to continue working to transform and improve mobility in Mexico, with more projects to come in 2024.

  • Urban Infrastructure Assessment and Improvements in Schools

In collaboration with iRAP (International Road Assessment Programme) through its representative in Mexico and 3M, Fundación Aleatica will implement the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) tool. The objective is to evaluate and improve the urban infrastructure around schools to ensure the safety of students and pedestrians.
