- With over 16k deaths per year, Mexico is ranked second in Latin America and seventh in the global level in terms of transit incidents.
- Fundación Aleatica signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to develop projects focused on improving road infrastructure conditions.
Mexico City, November 29, 2022.- With the presence of the Ambassador of Australia in Mexico, his Excellency Mr. Remo Moretta, as honorable witness, and Mr. Juan Manuel Mares Reyes, in representation of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, as well as various authorities from the mobility sector, civil society organizations and international and national experts, the activities of Fundación Aleatica para la SeguridadVial, A.C. formally got underway.
Fundación Aleatica, a non-profit organization, will seek tangible improvements in promoting the right to mobility under safe conditions. In Mexico, there are over 16k deaths per year caused by transit incidents–it is the seventh highest cause of death in the country–and, due to this situation, over 32k people ended up with a permanent disability. The results of road incidents in Mexico–both deaths and injuries–represent a human capital cost that ranges between 19 and 39 billion pesos per year.
“For Aleatica, our top priority is safety. That is why it is important to take leadership in the field, because it means putting people’s physical wellbeing at the center of our actions. Road safety is a necessary condition to facilitating development, so it is crucial to have high safety standards for high-performance highways. This is the only way to leverage their potential for promoting wellness, competition and connectivity,” said David Díaz, Aleatica Global CEO.
To ensure that the actions are going in the right direction, Fundación Aleatica will have the advice of national and international experts, through an Advisory Board comprised of Rob McInerney, CEO of iRAP (Australia); Dr. Francisco Alonso, Director of the Traffic and Road Safety Institute of the University of Valencia (Spain); María José Pessano, Executive Director of Fundación Gonzalo Rodríguez (Uruguay); Arturo Cervantes Trejo, Director of the National Alliance for Road Safety (ANASEVI) (Mexico); and Alejandra Leal, Co-Director of Céntrico (Mexico). At the event, Alonso, Pessano, Cervantes and Leal participated in a discussion about awareness, education and technology as central pillars for creating a culture of road safety, providing a broad perspective on the opportunities and challenges in this regard.
Fundación Aleatica has aligned itself to the goal of halving the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2030 of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety of the United Nations, and as its first activity, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), one of the most well-known international organizations in the field of road safety for highways and freeways.
This cooperative mechanism formalizes collaboration with iRAP, for the promotion of programs and projects that save lives and reduce injuries on high-performance highways through three lines of action: development of capabilities, disclosure and communications, and influence on public policy.
Development of capabilities shall be performed through the application of highway safety assessment and improvement programs based on iRAP methodologies, as well as activities for reducing, in a measurable way, deaths and injuries caused by traffic incidents. The goal is to standardize the road safety measures and develop platforms for supporting the industry in the adoption of practical improvements in the design, construction and operation of safer roads.
“Fundación Aleatica will be a catalyst to encourage synergies with strategic allies and to achieve this, it will adopt the “Safe System” approach as a basis, which recognizes that co-responsibility is necessary to work on the issue from an approach that encompasses infrastructure, drivers and vehicles,” says Bosco Martí, Chairman of Fundación Aleatica.
