Mexico to host regional road safety meeting in 2024

  • As a member of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, Fundación Aleatica will host this Latin American forum.
  • In 2024, strategic partners in global road safety come together to set the agenda for a global meeting to be held in 2025.
  • In Latin America, the main traffic incidents are attributed to speeding, alcohol, inappropriate use of seat belts and disregard for traffic regulations.

November 9th 2023 – In 2024, Mexico will host a regional meeting that the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance) convened to prepare the agenda for a global meeting in 2025 to review progress in road safety to achieve the goals set by the United Nations for the year 2030.

Mexico was awarded the venue after Aleatica Foundation’s efforts to host this meeting that will be a reference in the region to promote actions that lead to reduce fatalities related to road crashes.

The Alliance meetings are the place where organised civil society identifies, meets and organises itself as a road safety community that promotes strong actions to reduce traffic fatalities in Latin America.

In the region, the main road accidents are linked to speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs, inadequate use of seat belts and disrespect for traffic regulations.

Road crashes are the leading cause of youth mortality in Latin America, with 17 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to World Bank data. That figure is almost twice the European average of 9 per 100,000.

In August 2020, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, with the aim of reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries by 50% globally and especially in the regions with the highest incidence. The meeting organised by the Alliance allows to identify the progress made so far towards achieving the target.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), the global economic costs of road crashes amount to 3% of the world’s GDP, in addition to the fact that it is a problem that represents a significant social cost for families, government and businesses.

Aleatica Foundation recognises the value and importance of this regional forum to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing among non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the region in order to advance three key areas:

  1. Safe Infrastructure: Working with leading international standards and norms to minimise infrastructure-related risk on high performance roads.
  2. Safe vehicles: Promote and support global best practices and standards for safer vehicles to help prevent road crashes and protect road users.
  3. Safe mobility users: Inform as well as raise awareness to reduce high-risk behaviours and comply with established standards.

The Alliance’s Latin American Chapter equips, mobilises and connects NGOs to intensify regional action. It is a gathering that will be led by regional and global NGOs seeking to incorporate capacity building, inspiration and networking opportunities in the sector.

The forum also contributes to raising the collective voice of organisations on the issue of road safety and advocating for sustainable solutions, while strengthening the capacity of organised civil society to develop programmes and initiatives, manage funding, conduct research, and make recommendations on the issue.
